We all know that maintaining leather bags could be a tricky business since genuine leather bag usually ain’t that cheap, we’d surely want to keep them well maintained as long as possible. Here are the tips to take care leather bags, or any leather goods.
First, make sure that the bag is stored in the right room temperature. It doesn’t have to be air-conditioned 24/7. The key is the right temperature, not too hot and not too cold. I live at tropical country, which is quite humid, so i have to put air humidifier inside my storage room. If you live in a four-season country, you can do this trick, especially during autumn and winter. Keeping humidity in balance will keep your leather bags from fungi and preserve bag’s hardware from rust. And don’t place your bags near the window, where the long term exposure of sunlight could harm your leather bags.
Second, NEVER put your leather bag inside its box, put it inside dust bag instead and add silica gels inside the dust bag. This is not new tips, i know. The most important thing that you probably don’t know is we need to change silica gels every few months. Silica gels have expired date. I personally will change silica gels in every 3 months.
Third, buy a right size puffer for your bag. To maintain your leather bag’s shape, you must stuff it with puffer. Never underestimate the power of puffer! It’s cheap, and it will keep your bag in a good shape for as long as possible. Don’t use tissue to stuff your bag. I know tissue as cheap and you probably think it will do the job. But it would not. So help yourself and order the right puffer from Amazon or any market place.
Fourth, clean your bags with the leather cleaner after you take them out. I personally have used several leather cleaner sold in market place. I’m not suggesting you any brand since it is probably not available in your home country. But I’d suggest you to buy foam leather cleaner. You can use either soft tissue or microfiber cloth, just make sure that they’re clean before you use it. I suggest you to use white cloth, and (IMPORTANT!) use different cloth for different bag colors. For example never use the same cloth to clean both your black leather bag and white leather bag. You need to be careful since leather bags with lighter color have color transfer issue.
Fifth, make sure your hands are dry whenever you hold your leather bags. Don’t underestimate water as water stain could stay forever. For precaution, you better wrap the bag’s handle with silk twilly. Better be prepared than sorry.
Sixth, if you want to carry some makeup stuffs, put them inside a pouch then you can put the pouch inside the bag.
Last, when you’re carrying your bag, make sure it doesn’t rub against your outfit, as it would wear the leather out, especially for lamb skin, which is naturally very supple, hence you must give extra attention. Calfskin is more durable for daily use.
